What Is Cross-Docking? A Guide for Shippers

Cross-docking explained: how freight moves from inbound to outbound trucks with little or no storage time, when it saves money, and when it doesn't.

By JA Transportation & Warehousing ·

Cross-docking means freight comes into a warehouse on one truck and leaves on another — usually the same day or within a short window — without being put into long-term storage. It is one of the simplest ways to move freight faster and avoid paying to store goods that are only passing through.

How cross-docking works

  • Inbound: a trailer or truck arrives and is unloaded at the dock.
  • Sort: freight is checked, split, or combined by destination.
  • Outbound: goods are loaded onto the trucks heading to each delivery point.

When cross-docking makes sense

  • Splitting one full truckload into many local deliveries.
  • Combining shipments from several suppliers into one outbound load.
  • Moving freight from a 53-foot trailer into box trucks for city delivery.
  • Keeping storage costs down for goods that should keep moving.

When it doesn't

If freight needs to wait days or weeks for a customer, storage may be the better fit. Our pallet storage is a flat $18 per pallet per month, so you can mix both: cross-dock what's moving, store what isn't.

Cross-docking in Philadelphia and South Jersey

Our Philadelphia warehouse handles cross-docking close to major highways, and our Cinnaminson hub supports distribution and delivery across South Jersey. Outbound loads can go straight into our last-mile distribution or trucking services.

Prepare your freight before requesting a Philadelphia cross-dock

Start with the inbound shipment and the outbound plan, not just a delivery date. Our cross-docking service transfers freight through Philadelphia; Cinnaminson supports distribution coordination and has no loading docks. Confirm the receiving location with our team before sending a driver.

  • Describe the goods, pallet or carton count, total weight, and approximate dimensions. Flag fragile freight, damaged packaging, or special handling needs for review.
  • Share the inbound truck or trailer type, carrier contact, expected arrival window, and any unloading requirements.
  • List each outbound destination and its pallet or carton allocation. Include delivery ZIP codes, receiver contacts, and appointment windows.
  • Have the bill of lading, packing list, shipment references, and destination labels available. Ask dispatch which paperwork and labeling the specific job requires.
  • Tell us whether the load needs sorting, consolidation, re-stacking, or wrapping. Review our warehouse handling services rather than assuming preparation is included in the transfer.

Coordinate inbound and outbound appointments

A cross-dock works best when the next carrier and receiving appointment are arranged before the inbound truck arrives. Share both time windows in your freight quote request, including any flexibility. Standard warehouse hours are 9 AM–3 PM; transport runs overnight, but that does not mean the warehouse is open overnight. Dispatch must confirm dock access, capacity, equipment, and the handoff schedule.

For regional deliveries, use our service-area checker and transit estimator as planning tools. Calculated driving and arrival ranges are not confirmed appointments or guaranteed delivery times. For freight connected to port or airport activity, see our Philadelphia port and airport corridor guide and confirm the transfer arrangements with dispatch.

If the outbound truck is delayed

Tell our team as soon as an arrival window changes. If freight must wait, ask whether pallet storage is the better arrangement and confirm capacity and separate handling costs. Do not assume a same-day transfer or temporary storage is included in the quote. Online requests begin the review process; the team confirms the job before freight arrives.
